There are essentially two zones in arcane legions: in-play, and out-of-play. The in-play zone is called the Battlefield; this is where the game is played. The out of play zone is where downed figures and units are placed. The out of play zone is different from a player’s collection. The out of play zone is still considered part of the game, while a player's collection is considered outside the game.

Each player controls an army, which is the total of all their units on the battlefield. The term friendly units refers to all of a player's units and all units controlled by their allies. Each player also has a number of order points (usually only on their own turn) as well as a number of victory points.

Downed figures placed in the out-of-play zone must know their unit of origin. (This is important for abilities that return downed figures to play.)
